Over 300,000 tonnes of textile waste goes to landfill in Australia. Much of this goes overseas and ends up on the shores or clogging vital waterways. Governments are looking to solutions and have set out policies to create a circular economy where textiles can be reused, recycled, revalued and repurposed efficiently and effectively, closing the loop on this massive waste production.

We can all do our small bit to minimise textile waste by:

• reducing consumption (Aussies buy about 27kg of clothing each per year)

• caring for clothing appropriately to retain quality

• restoring preloved clothing items

• repurposing clothing for another use

• revaluing textiles and fabrics to slow down production and eliminate ‘fast fashion’
